Were it not for the War in Heaven, Vónekh VII would be untouched by even the crudest of lifeforms. Yet as fate would have it, life indeed came crashing down on this bleak, treacherous planet some six millennia ago. During the final throes of the war, a terrible cataclysm ripped through both forces. The skies blazed with destruction and were streaked with falling starships. This once barren world would witness the ultimate, climactic battle and the almost complete annihilation of the Aëdr, a mighty race who once strode among the stars.
The legacy of those once proud and powerful beings remains on Vónekh VII for their descendants to unearth. The shattered carcasses of ruined starships still lie rotting in the darkest and most remote locations: hidden beneath the searing dunes of Vaëtar; buried in the undergrowth of its steaming jungles; resting high among the towering peaks of Khaïrnóth; submerged deep in its cratered lakes and glacial fjords. Still even further north, across icebound seas, mysterious Nharán holds its own secrets behind a veil of soul-shuddering snows.
The Void stirs. Forces beyond comprehension are starting to awaken. Increasingly there have been reports of fell creatures coming forth from the Void to wreak havoc on the living. The Symmetron system of pillars that spans a vast network of planets and moons is failing. Existing on the threshold between material reality and the Void, Vónekh VII will be at the heart of the coming catastrophe. To its people, a great burden has fallen: to decide the fate of galaxies.
Yet amid the peril their is hope. A potent force lies dormant among the lost technologies of the Aëdr, evidence of their commanders of old, beings of immense power and wisdom known as the Násr. Could these living relics offer a way to save Vónekh VII from the fury of the Void? In any case, whatever secrets this grim world holds must be uncovered before it’s too late.
The far north-west is a cold place where freezing winter storms blow across the northern ocean from the distant and frozen wastelands beyond. Summers are fleeting and fragile things that flitter by as no more than a memory before the chill of winter returns with a grim vengeance. High amidst these cold mountains lies the bleak fortress city of Kheïtan. It is a place of dread, raised up from the dark stones by the hands of captive slaves to serve one singular purpose. War.
Beyond the southern mountains and the shattered lands of the west the land flattens, giving way to the dark and primeval forests of Duskwood Vale. Those who wander its shadowy glades might marvel and wonder at why such a vast forest appears so terribly silent and bereft of all the expected signs of arboreal life. Such thoughts do not linger though, for such wanderers do soon too fall silent. For here, even the trees know hate.
Upon the far north coast, the tall cliffs rise from the seething, black ocean like daggers in the night. And crowded upon these forsaken cliffs in their countless thousands dwell all the souls of the dead. All about them, vile demons flitter in and out of the hapless masses like a pack of wolves preying upon a herd. Nowhere in this world or the next can a more sorrowful sight be witnessed.
During the War in Heaven, the wrecked hull of a massive starship fell from skies here and tore a vast crater in the earth. The ocean rushed in to fill the gaping hole, creating a great lake which covers most of the region. Much of the land that remains here now consists of only shattered rocks and the tall, treacherous cliffs that overlook the crater. Here lies an ancient secret, hidden beneath the churning, dark waters rests forgotten knowledge that holds the power to reach the distant stars.
Like the backbone of a primeval leviathan, the mountains of the Silver Spine rise from the earth to divide the continent of Khaïrnóth in two. This barrier of titanic stone seperates north from south, and the violent Fallen from their bellicose southern kin. Though ostensibly the domain of the Lánaraï, the high peaks are crawling with Kheïtanni warbands, and the passes clogged with the decaying remnants of countless battles.
Amidst the cloud-grazing peaks of the southern mountains, the skyborne Lánaraï have made their home. A natural fortress, this mighty temple-city is perched upon the two imposing peaks known as The Pillars of Heaven. In its tallest towers, the most powerful of the Lánaraï work tirelessly, weaving complex spells and reconstructing ancient and arcane technologies in the vain hope that they will regain enough of their former knowledge to leave Vónekh VII forever.
The planet of Vónekh VII is a stark and brutal world. Drenched in blood and dread, those unlucky enough to be trapped on its surface fight a never ending war for survival. With eyes cast skyward, many dream of going to a home that they have never been to and have only heard tales of. On the horizon they see the rising darkness, and the infinite terror stirring within.
An ancient and once powerful race has been rent asunder by a war long since passed. Yet the proud and powerfully winged Lánaraï still fight their fallen kin, the dark and brutal Kheïtanni, in a bloody and seemingly perpetual stalemate. Neither faction will rest until the extermination of the other is complete.
Unknown to these vying factions, a growing darkness and malevolence has taken seed in the depths of the Void. In the utter blackness of this sinister nether realm, one who was thought destroyed rises once more. Rhïarrh, The Fire in Heaven, whom the fallen call the Tyrant-God.
It was His infernal desire to create and control life itself that once set in motion the war that still reverberates though generations of warriors that follow. A war that pitted brother against brother, and turned a galaxy-spanning empire to ash.
For now, Rhïarrh remains trapped in the eternal darkness of the Void. In fury, He strains against the chains that bind him and His infinite anger and seething hatred burns like a new star in the firmament. A terrible fire whose searing blaze reaches out into the material universe. It is prophesied that should He return, all are doomed to perish.
As the sky blackens with the threat of a coming storm, a new hope springs from the darkness. Ancient technologies of the Aëdr, thought to have been forever lost, have been unearthed.
Now over shattered relics and the skeletal remains of once mighty starships, the battles between the Kheïtanni and the Lánaraï increase in ferocity. Rhïarrh's hateful gaze turns northwards and where it falls, unspeakable horrors begin to stir in the darkness and in the ground below. The dark and wild places of the world fill with vile things born of the Void. These Lán-Faën, the nightmares of men made real, now plague the lands of mortals. The end of all things is truly at hand.
For the long lost stars or for blood and vengeance, the time is now. Stand your ground, rise to the challenge and fight. Before the raging fire consumes us all.
An ancient race has been sundered by a war long since passed. What was wrought in that great conflict still dominates their fates as these opposing factions continue to vie for dominance. It is an ongoing saga of hatred and betrayal. A kinship turned to ash, heralding a future drenched in blood.
